Sustainable Architecture
Our vision for Jua Hope Trust extends beyond economic empowerment and social change—we are committed to creating spaces that reflect our deep respect for the environment. The shelter-restaurants are designed with Earthship-inspired principles, ensuring they are eco-friendly, sustainable, and self-sufficient.
Eco-Friendly Materials
The shelter-restaurant utilizes local, recycled, and repurposed materials, including the innovative use of bottles as windows to create unique lighting effects. This approach not only reduces our environmental footprint but also aligns with our sustainability goals.
Energy Efficiency
Solar panels provide clean energy for lighting and heating, while rainwater harvesting systems ensure a sustainable water supply. A biodigester system converts waste into usable energy.
Cultural Integration
The design reflects local Kurian art and architectural styles, fostering a sense of community ownership and pride. Each shelter is more than just a refuge; it’s a landmark that embodies positive change. The cultural elements can be adapted to resonate with the unique identity and traditions of each region, enhancing local engagement and ownership.
Restaurant Area
Serving locals and tourists, this space promotes community interaction and supports local and regional cuisine. It is a sustainable source of income and comes with training on restaurant management, courses on financial literacy and professional cooking sessions including safety standards.
Commercial Spaces
These areas are designed for women entrepreneurs to run their businesses, facilitated by our entrepreneurship courses. They provide space for any small business, whether it is a clothes shop, local produce or a hairdressing salon.
Multifunctional Space
This versatile space hosts workshops, open talks and community events, including celebrations of alternative rites of passage. It is separate from the restaurant area to provide additional space for different event formats. It also provides a quiet space for women’s leadership input or mentoring sessions.
Community Gathering
The inner courtyard can be used for various activities such as cultural celebrations, public meetings, and community-led initiatives. It also serves as a safe space for open dialogues, alternative rites of passage, or simply as a place for informal interactions and relaxation.
Why Sustainability Matters
Our commitment to sustainable architecture ensures that the shelter-restaurants are not only safe havens for women but also exemplars of how communities can thrive in harmony with the environment. As we expand, our goal is to minimize environmental impact and uphold our ecological and social values in each new location.
Collaborations
In partnership with local architects and international universities, we continually innovate and adapt our architectural designs to meet the unique needs of each community. This sustainable approach ensures the resilience and cost-effectiveness of our shelters, contributing to their long-term success. Interested in collaborating?
Our Vision
Through our franchise model, Jua Hope Trust aims to build a network of women-led shelters across Kenya, with plans to expand into countries like Tanzania, Sierra Leone and India. This sustainable system empowers women while actively contributing to the eradication of FGM and domestic violence. As we expand, sustainable architecture will remain central to our approach, creating eco-friendly, economically viable spaces that set a new standard for community development. In doing so, we support 12 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
